St. Anastasius of Persia - Martyr

Statue carved - c.1702-1703
Riccardi signed a commitment on 19 April 1702 to sculpt the statue, that was delivered in March 1703.

Sculptor - Giuseppe Riccardi
He received two payments, December 1702 and January 1703, with the final balance of 60 scudi in April 1703.

Height - 3.1 m. (10ft 4in) travertine
The holy martyr is shown here bald with a long beard, wearing a tunic with wide sleeves.

Anastasius was originally a Zoroastrian soldier in the army of Khusrau II, Shah of the Sassanid Empire of Persia.  After deserting the army, he converted to Christianity. He was baptized at Jerusalem, and became a monk. When the Persians conquered Jerusalem in 628 he was brought before the Shah who had him executed.
